X-06: FUTURESPY returns on Friday 19th April in a special episode. X-06 has been reactivated, and also rebooted -There will be some changes!
By Series Creator James Baxter
The X-06: FUTURESPY podcast has been around for quite some time, and you can check out the older episodes here starting with Series 1. The latest series, starting this week with an episode called 'The Brain Centre', comes with a few improvements which I hope will meet with the approval of long-term fans.
Move to Full-Cast
Previously, the show has had only one voice (with a few minor exceptions), with me playing multiple roles in each story and stretching my ability to do accents beyond the limit! I was constantly finding ways to not feature characters whose voice I couldn’t approximate – And it was all getting a bit ridiculous, never hearing any women! I finally gathered enough confidence to ask if others wanted to be involved, and I was taken aback by the quantity and quality of folks wanting to take a role. Going forward, new episodes will have a full cast of talented voice actors. I can’t wait for listeners to hear them.
Change of direction
Previously, I’ve been telling short, simple stories and trying to emulate the straightforward feeling of the 1960s Supermarionation shows – Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5 etc. Upon moving to full-cast, I knew at once that I would have to offer interesting roles which allowed for actors to do a bit more than just say ‘Fire missile two!’ (Not that there’s anything wrong with that – I love that sort of thing…). So, this new Futurespy is around 45 minutes long, and there’s slightly - and I mean slightly - more depth to the characters and to the storyline. Don’t worry though, this is still written and pitched as a 60s family show, so there’s no time for navel-gazing. A lovely reviewer once said that the show had the feeling of the ITC adventure shows – Danger Man, Prisoner, The Champions etc, and so I’ve lent much more towards those shows in terms of paying homage.
New music
The wonderfully era-appropriate music in FUTURESPY, by the mysterious Mister Brown, has been enriched with some new compositions from the maestro himself. As the show moves into 1968, the 70s are just around the corner and we have a new theme tune – which is so redolent of late sixties spy-fi TV shows it’s amazing. Get ready to find yourself whistling and humming along to it.
Stay tuned for a trailer and some video content, coming soon.
X-06: FUTURESPY is made for love, not money, by me – an individual, not a company - from my cupboard in Oxford, UK. It’s entirely non-monetized and costs me an awful lot of cash and time and effort to produce. If you like the show, please let the world know about it and encourage new listeners. You have authorisation from the British Security Service to use force if necessary.
